The Finance Manager will be a key member of the senior management team, contributing financial leadership and strategic advice in the development and enhancement of financial policies, procedures and internal controls in a manner that contributes to the development and execution of United Way’s strategic direction.


  • Work with external auditors to ensure accurate financial statements
  • Manage the integrity of financial accounting systems and internal controls
  • Draft yearly budget in co-operation with Executive Director, and Treasurer
  • Prepare monthly financial statements
  • Prepare and present financial reports and statements at monthly Finance Committee meetings
  • File regulatory reports to agencies including Canada Revenue Agency
  • Develop and follow systems to ensure accurate campaign reporting, financial integrity, and compliance with board policy and government regulations
  • Ensure systems are maintained, controlled, secured, and backed-up
  • Manage, motivate, and coach finance department support staff
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of policies
  • Prepare, review and reconcile confidential payroll files, and insure all remittances are made including government taxes, RRSP and Health Insurance premiums
  • Issue all forms and statements for payroll, including T4’s, and ROE’s
  • Oversee banking and investments, monitor cash flow, and ensure proper bank reconciliations
  • Issue income tax receipts
  • Bank deposits
  • Accounts receivables
  • Account payables
  • Cheque disbursements
  • Reconcile accounting system to database
  • Provide timely and accurate information to other departments including Resource Development, Community Investments, and the Executive Director
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements & Experience

  • University Degree/Designation in an applicable field;
  • Three to five years experience
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by setting clear direction and translating strategies into focused and aligned goals, specific accountabilities and action plans that are results-oriented
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for donor relations and interoffice communications
  • Experience with various softwares including accounting and database software, and Microsoft office
  • Flexibility to deal with multiple deadlines
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours (as required) to meet deadlines and attend meetings
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, conflict resolution, decision-making and time management skills
