Happy Holidays!
United Way Centraide North East Ontario - Wednesday, 16 December 2020
As I close out my first year as Executive Director of United Way Centraide North East Ontario, I reflect on the extraordinary year that is coming to an end. I am so fortunate to be a part of the team of local experts at United Way as we identify and invest in local programs and services that provide support for issues like homelessness, social isolation, increased domestic violence, food insecurities, and more.
I am in awe of how Northern Ontarians have come together to support our neighbours during this time of increased need. In a year when services and programs have been stretched to the limits with increased demand for support, decreased resources, and concern about the sustainability of many programs, you have been there.
Never have I been prouder to call Northeastern Ontario home than I am right now. Over the past months, I have witnessed individuals and groups in our communities coming together to hold fundraising events, gather warm coats and clothing, organize food drives and do what they can to help our neighbours who need a hand up. And I have seen so many of our local organizations who have reimagined their services to welcome more people than ever into programs that offer food, warm shelter, crisis support and more, all while making each and every dollar stretch to support the growing number of people who need us right now.
I think of the phrase “ It takes a community to raise a child” and indeed, as Northern Ontarians, we know the true meaning of community and providing the best opportunity for people to be the best they can be.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of United Way Centraide North East Ontario, I would like to thank you for investing in our community and wish you and your loved ones a very happy holiday season and a healthy and happy new year.
Mary Lou Hussak, Executive Director
