Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Valery

Valery Carey is a dedicated volunteer whose commitment to giving back has touched countless lives. Since the 2023 tax year, Valery has completed hundreds of income tax returns through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), often going above and beyond to assist individuals with multiple years of back taxes—sometimes as many as ten years’ worth—to help them regain financial stability.

Her passion for community service spans decades, beginning as a candy striper and later canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society and the Arthritis Foundation. Valery has served as a treasurer and Board member for Bethlehem Place in St. Catharines and the Sierra Foundation of Canada, volunteered at Kivi Park, and supported United Way Centraide North East Ontario (UWCNEO) in reviewing financial statements for funding allocations. She remains deeply involved in the CVITP year-round, assisting individuals through both telephone and in-person tax preparation sessions. Additionally, Valery has helped low-income families shop for back-to-school clothing and supplies through United Way programs.

For Valery, volunteering is more than just giving back—it’s a way to connect with her community. "I have found that volunteering helps me feel a part of the community," she says. Her tireless efforts and unwavering dedication have now been recognized with the King Charles Coronation Medal, a well-deserved honor that reflects her lifelong commitment to helping others.
