Addressing Northern Ontario's Homelessness Crisis

Addressing Northern Ontario’s Homelessness Crisis: A Call for Action

The recent report from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) paints a troubling picture of the escalating homelessness crisis, particularly in Northern Ontario. With homelessness in the North rising by an estimated 204% since 2016 — four times faster than in the southern part of the province — the need for urgent action has never been clearer. The report highlights the region’s acute vulnerabilities, driven by geographic isolation, limited infrastructure, and systemic inequities, particularly affecting Indigenous populations. It also emphasizes the lack of affordable housing and long-term support systems as major drivers of the crisis.

While the challenges are significant, there is hope. Many of the recommendations in the AMO report align with efforts already underway to address homelessness, such as the need for increased housing stock and better support for those at risk. The report also stresses the importance of preventing homelessness by enhancing social housing and providing targeted support services for individuals with complex needs. At United Way, we are committed to working alongside local partners to address this crisis, ensuring that all communities in Northern Ontario have the resources they need to create safe, stable housing solutions for everyone. The time for action is now, and together, we can make a difference in tackling this growing issue.
