Damian found his place thanks to a United Way funded program.

It’s estimated that 1 in 5 youth in Ontario have a mental health challenge, and Damian is one of them.

Damian is a 13-year-old young man that struggles with social anxiety, negative thoughts and depressions for most of his young life. 2019 was an especially tough year. Damian struggled to figure out who he was and if he was worthy of his place on earth. Damian is not alone. In Canada, many of our youth are struggling. The youth suicide rate is the third-highest in the industrialized world. For Damian, the physical and mental changes he experienced were complicated with not having a supportive male role model in his life. Damian connected with a United Way-supported program.

The change wasn’t instant. Damian remained guarded. He believed he would never find a mentor, a friend, that would want to build a relationship with him. Then he met Jason.

In a few short months, the difference in Damian was life-changing. He is working on his self-esteem, coping skills and confidence. He smiles more, is interested in trying new things, and has built a lasting friendship.

United Way helps kids be all they can be by working with local partners and funding the most promising and impactful programs that help them reach their potential.

When you invest in United Way, you are helping young people like Damian believe in their potential.  Please consider giving a gift to support youth in our community.
