What Is the “Summer Slide”?
Every summer, many students experience a setback in academic skills—a phenomenon often referred to as the “Summer Slide.” For children from vulnerable or low-income families, the impact can be even more significant. Without regular access to books, educational activities, or enriching experiences, these children may return to school in the fall further behind than their peers.
Why It Matters
Research shows that:
- Students can lose up to two months of reading and math skills over the summer.
- By the end of Grade 5, children from low-income families may fall up to 2.5 years behind their peers academically.
- These losses compound over time, widening the achievement gap and making it harder for children to catch up.
At United Way, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed—year-round.
How to Help Kids Stay on Track
You don’t need expensive programs to keep kids learning. Here are simple, accessible ideas that families and caregivers can use all summer long:
1. Make Reading Routine
- Visit the local library for free summer reading programs.
- Start a family reading challenge.
- Let kids choose books based on their interests to keep them engaged.
2. Make Learning Fun
- Turn everyday moments into learning opportunities: count groceries, cook using measurements, or explore nature.
- Try free online tools like ABCmouse, Khan Academy, or Scholastic Learn at Home. Talk to the teacher and see what resources they have available.
3. Enrich Through Experiences
- Attend free community events or explore museums on discounted days.
- Join summer day camps supported by local charities or community partners.
4. Support Through Programs
United Way helps fund and support local summer literacy and learning programs for children who need them most. By investing in these initiatives, we ensure kids are ready to learn when school starts again.
