Starting over in a new community is never easy. For Soma Mahmoudi, it meant stepping into the unknown—new surroundings, unfamiliar faces, and the challenge of building a life from the ground up.
“Everything felt new and unfamiliar,” she shares. “I didn’t know many people. I was hoping to find a place where I could feel comfortable and slowly build a life for myself and my family.”
Like many newcomers, Soma faced the quiet weight of isolation. But instead of staying on the sidelines, she chose to take a small but meaningful step forward by volunteering with United Way through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.
“I didn’t want to feel isolated,” Soma says. “I wanted to connect with people and do something meaningful. United Way felt like a welcoming place to start, even though I was a bit nervous in the beginning.”
Through the program, Soma began helping individuals and families in need prepare and file their income taxes—an essential service that ensures people can access critical benefits and supports. But while she was helping others, something else was happening too.
“At first, it was just small conversations,” she explains. “But step by step I became more confident. People were kind and supportive, and that helped me feel that I belong here.”
Volunteering became more than just an activity, it became a bridge. A bridge to connection, to confidence, and to a renewed sense of purpose.
Along the way, Soma discovered strengths she didn’t fully realize she had.
“I learned that I am stronger and more capable than I thought,” she says. “Even when I feel unsure, I can still try, learn, and grow.”
That growth extended beyond her volunteer role. The experience helped her build practical skills, better understand workplace expectations, and gain the confidence needed to pursue full-time employment.
“Volunteering improved my communication and gave me experience that made me feel more ready for a full-time job.”
Today, Soma’s journey is a powerful reminder that sometimes the smallest steps like signing up to volunteer, can lead to the biggest transformations.
Her advice to others who may be feeling unsure or alone?
“Don’t be afraid to start, even with small steps. Volunteering can really help you connect with others and find your way.”
At United Way, stories like Soma’s show the true impact of community. When people come together to support one another, we don’t just meet immediate needs—we build belonging, confidence, and brighter futures for everyone.
