Newcomers Enrich Our Communities Through Volunteerism

When people think about what makes a community thrive, words like connection, belonging, and support often come to mind. For newcomers—individuals and families who have recently arrived in Northern Ontario—these values are especially important. Starting life in a new country can be both exciting and challenging. Finding ways to feel at home, build friendships, and contribute to the community is essential.

One of the most powerful pathways to connection for newcomers is volunteering.

Building Belonging Through Volunteerism

Volunteering allows newcomers to engage with their community in meaningful ways. Whether helping at a local event, joining a community board, or supporting a charitable campaign, giving time and talent creates opportunities to meet people, learn about local culture, and practice language skills. For many, it’s the first step toward building the sense of belonging that transforms a new place into home.

Strengthening Communities Together

Communities benefit immensely when newcomers bring their skills, energy, and diverse perspectives to volunteer roles. They introduce fresh ideas, cultural traditions, and new ways of solving challenges. Their involvement enriches organizations and makes programs stronger, more inclusive, and more representative of the communities they serve.

For example, a newcomer who volunteers at a food bank may notice dietary needs specific to their culture and share ideas that help the organization serve clients better. Others may lend professional expertise, such as accounting, teaching, or health care, to support local programs. In each case, the community becomes more vibrant and resilient because of their contribution.

Opening Doors to Opportunity

Volunteering also supports newcomers in their personal journeys. It can be a stepping stone to employment by helping build Canadian work experience and professional networks. It fosters confidence and leadership skills while providing references that are often crucial for finding a job. Most importantly, it’s a way for newcomers to show that they are not just residents—they are active participants shaping the future of our communities.

United Way’s Role

At United Way Centraide North East Ontario/Nord-est de l’Ontario, we see firsthand how volunteerism builds stronger communities. Through partnerships with local organizations, we connect people—including newcomers—with opportunities to get involved. Whether it’s supporting youth programs, assisting with events, or lending expertise to community initiatives, every volunteer makes a difference.

We believe that when newcomers thrive, our whole community thrives. Their stories of courage, resilience, and generosity inspire us all to give back in ways that create lasting impact.

If you are a newcomer looking to connect with your community, consider volunteering. It’s a chance to share your talents, meet new friends, and discover the pride that comes from giving back. If you are already established in Northern Ontario, we invite you to welcome newcomers by encouraging, mentoring, and volunteering alongside them.
