Living Wages Helps Create a Community Where Everyone Can Thrive

November 10–14 marks Living Wage Week, a time to recognize the importance of fair pay and the role it plays in helping individuals and families thrive.

United Way Centraide North East Ontario (UWCNEO) is proud to partner with the Sudbury Workers Education and Advocacy Centre, Public Health Sudbury and Districts, and the Sudbury and District Labour Council to highlight why a living wage matters — for workers, for families, and for the health of our entire community.

At UWCNEO, our mission is to move people from poverty to possibility. We know that poverty isn’t just about dollars and cents — it’s about limited choices, constant stress, and fewer opportunities to build a better future.

Why a Living Wage Matters

More than half of Canadians (55%) say thinking about their finances makes them anxious, and two in five (41%) experience physical symptoms such as heart palpitations when discussing money.

A living wage helps change that. It provides the breathing room families need to plan ahead, participate in community life, and build lasting stability.

The 2025 Living Wage in Northern Ontario

This year, the living wage for Northern Ontario has been calculated at $21.10 per hour — an increase of $0.80 (3.9%) over last year and $3.50 higher than the current minimum wage.

This figure reflects what it truly costs to live and work in our region — covering essentials such as housing, food, transportation, childcare, and other basic needs — without falling into poverty.

Working Together for a Thriving Community

UWCNEO is proud to stand alongside our partners in advocating for fair wages and equitable opportunities. Together, we are working to build communities that are stronger, more inclusive, and more equitable — because when everyone has what they need to live and participate fully, we all benefit.
